Many also noted that programmes of Christian initiation do not always manage to introduce children, adolescents and young adults to the beauty of the life of faith. When a community is a place of fellowship and a true family of God’s children, it vibrantly generates and transmits the faith. But where a mentality of delegation and bureaucracy holds sway, Christian initiation becomes nothing more than a course of religious instruction ending with the sacrament of Confirmation. We urgently need a profound rethinking of the way catechesis is presented and of the connection between passing on the faith in families and in the community, with greater emphasis on processes of personal accompaniment.
